What is Coorg best for, and when is it too busy

Coorg (Kodagu) has the most sightseeing and the widest choice of resorts of the three, and it is also the farthest from Bangalore.

Is it worth going to Coorg? For a first hill trip or a family weekend with sightseeing, yes. Abbey Falls and Raja's Seat are close to Madikeri, Dubare Elephant Camp is a favourite with children, and Namdroling Monastery (the Golden Temple) at Bylakuppe is on the way in. Coorg also has its own food: Kodava cuisine, with dishes such as pandi curry and akki roti, is a reason to go by itself. Coorg is often called the Scotland of India, and its resorts range from simple homestays to large luxury properties.

When to avoid Coorg

Long weekends are the hardest time. Traffic on the Mysore side builds up, and the main viewpoints get crowded. Bengaluru weekend-travel groups also report that late April and May feel warm and dry. If you only have two days and dislike queues, pick a regular weekend in the cooler months, or pick somewhere closer.

Coorg wins on things to do. For height, though, look to the peaks further north.

What is Chikmagalur best for, and who should skip it

Chikmagalur is the pick for height: Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak at about 1,930 m, is reached by road to a parking area and then about 500 steps to the top.

Chikmagalur (officially Chikkamagaluru) suits active trips. Baba Budangiri and Seethalayyanagiri sit on the same ridge as Mullayanagiri, and Hebbe Falls and Jhari Falls are reached by jeep trails through the estates. The town also has coffee heritage: the hills here are linked with Baba Budan and India's early coffee story.

Which is cooler, Coorg or Chikmagalur? The Chikmagalur summits are higher, so the peaks feel cooler. In the towns themselves, both feel warm by day in April and May.

Who should skip Chikmagalur

Skip it if you want one base and no sightseeing drives. The best of Chikmagalur is spread across the hills, so a weekend there means time in a jeep or car between treks.

Where should you go in each season

Monsoon (June to September) favours Sakleshpur and Chikmagalur for waterfalls and green estates, if you are fine with rain and some closed trails. For most people, the best time for all three is the cooler stretch from October to February.

4-day loop: Coorg and Sakleshpur

Day 1: Bangalore to Coorg via Mysore.
Day 2: Sightseeing around Madikeri.
Day 3: Drive to Sakleshpur. It is a long day's drive, so start early and keep separate nights for each place.
Day 4: Sakleshpur back to Bangalore via Hassan.

Travellers who have done this loop tend to start in Coorg and end in Sakleshpur, so the quiet part of the trip comes last. These loops start from Bangalore. If you are starting from the coast instead, the choice looks different.

Sakleshpur or Coorg from Mangaluru: which is easier

From Mangaluru, Sakleshpur sits on the same highway that climbs the ghats towards Hassan, which makes it the more direct of the two.

Madikeri (Coorg) or Sakleshpur is a common question for weekend trips from Mangalore. The Sakleshpur route runs straight up the Bangalore-Mangaluru highway through Shiradi Ghat, with no change of road. Coorg is a separate route inland. In monsoon, check the road status on Shiradi Ghat before you leave, as the ghat section sees heavy rain.
