Hill stations near Bangalore, ranked by drive time not kilometres — from Nandi Hills at 1.5 hours to Ooty at 7. The nearest, the coldest, which suits which month, and what to check.
Hill stations near Bangalore fall into four drive-time bands. Nandi Hills is 1.5 to 2 hours away. Yelagiri takes about 2.5 to 4 hours, Horsley Hills about 3 to 4.5. Sakleshpur and Chikmagalur take 4 to 5, Yercaud and BR Hills about 5 to 6, and Coorg 5 to 7. Ooty takes about 7 hours, and Wayanad 6 to 7.5.
Most lists of nearby hill stations sort the places by kilometres, but on a weekend trip it is the hours that count. Sakleshpur, on the edge of the Western Ghats, is about 220 km from Bengaluru by road and Yercaud about 225 to 245 km, yet the first takes 4 to 5 hours and the second about 5 to 6. The forest roads to Ooty and Wayanad also close at night.
This guide covers the nearest hill station, the coldest one, which month suits which hill, the crowded and the quiet ones, and the rules to check before you leave. The full table comes first.
Hill stations near Bangalore at a glance
The ten places below are sorted by drive time, nearest first, so you can match a hill station to the trip you have in mind.
| Hill station | State | From Bengaluru | Drive time | Height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nandi Hills | Karnataka | about 60 km | 1.5 to 2 hours | 1,478 m |
| Yelagiri | Tamil Nadu | about 155 to 160 km | about 2.5 to 4 hours | 1,410 m |
| Horsley Hills | Andhra Pradesh | about 150 to 165 km | about 3 to 4.5 hours | about 1,265 to 1,290 m |
| Sakleshpur | Karnataka | about 220 km | 4 to 5 hours | 932 m |
| Chikmagalur | Karnataka | about 240 to 250 km | 4 to 5 hours | 1,090 m (town) |
| Yercaud | Tamil Nadu | about 225 to 245 km | about 5 to 6 hours | 1,515 m |
| BR Hills | Karnataka | about 160 to 215 km, by route | about 5 to 6 hours | peaks up to 1,800 m |
| Coorg (Madikeri) | Karnataka | about 260 to 265 km | 5 to 7 hours | 1,170 m |
| Ooty | Tamil Nadu | about 270 km | about 7 hours | 2,240 m |
| Wayanad | Kerala | about 280 to 310 km | 6 to 7.5 hours | varies (a district, not one town) |
Bengaluru itself sits at about 900 m, so a hill needs real height to feel cooler.
Drive times are for a car in normal traffic, from published route guides and drive reports (2013 to 2025); add time on long weekends.
Before you plan a visit to any of them, start with the nearest of them all.
What is the nearest hill station to Bangalore
Nandi Hills is the nearest hill station to Bangalore, about 60 km north of the city in Chikkaballapur district and 1.5 to 2 hours by road. It is the one hill station within 2 hours of Bengaluru.
At 1,478 m, the top of Nandi Hills sits about 580 m higher than Bengaluru. Karnataka Tourism names Tipu's Drop and the Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple as its main sights, and lists September to February as the best time to visit.
The catch is the weekend crowd. In March 2022 the district administration brought in weekend passes and capped parking at 300 cars and 1,000 two-wheelers. A July 2024 news report described visitors stranded in a long queue of vehicles on the road up. From March 25 to April 25, 2025, the hill was shut on weekdays for road repairs. Official timings are 6 am to 6 pm. With the rules changing this often, check the current one before you set out.
Nandi Hills is a half-day trip, not a stay; for a night in the hills, look at the next band. Skandagiri, Savandurga and Ramanagara are nearby rocky hills for a morning climb rather than hill stations you stay in, and the Skandagiri night trek has its own guide.
Drive a few hours longer and the choice of hills grows.
Which hill stations can you reach in 2, 4, 6 or 7 hours from Bengaluru
The drive time decides which hill station fits your weekend: up to 2 hours is a morning trip, 3 to 4 hours is a relaxed overnight, 4 to 6 hours needs two days, and 7 hours or more needs three. On a two-day weekend, two drives of 4 to 6 hours already take 8 to 12 hours of it.
Coorg, Chikmagalur and Ooty, the famous names on most lists, are all 4 hours or more away. The places below are grouped into those bands.
Up to 2 hours - Nandi Hills
Nandi Hills is the only hill station in this band, and the section above covers it.
About 3 to 4.5 hours - Yelagiri and Horsley Hills
Yelagiri. Yelagiri is a small hill village at 1,410 m in Tirupathur district, Tamil Nadu, about 155 to 160 km from Bengaluru and about 2.5 to 4 hours by road. The last stretch is a road with 14 hairpin bends off NH48. Its long-term average high is about 28°C across the year, so it is mild rather than cold.
Horsley Hills. Horsley Hills is about 150 to 165 km away in Andhra Pradesh, about 3 to 4.5 hours by road via Hoskote, Chintamani and Madanapalle, and stands at about 1,265 to 1,290 m. Travel guides describe it as the quiet one of this band, though New Year brings large crowds.
4 to 6 hours - Sakleshpur, Chikmagalur, Yercaud, BR Hills and Coorg
Sakleshpur. Sakleshpur is about 220 km away, 4 to 5 hours by road: a coffee and spice town at 932 m in the Malnad (Malenadu) hills of Hassan district, on the edge of the Western Ghats. It gets its own section further down.
Chikmagalur (Chikkamagaluru). Chikmagalur is about 240 to 250 km away, 4 to 5 hours by road, a town at 1,090 m below Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak at 1,925 m. Mullayanagiri draws so many tourist vehicles that, from September 2025, the road up needs an online booking.
Yercaud. Yercaud is about 225 to 245 km away, about 5 to 6 hours by road, at 1,515 m in the Shevaroy Hills of the Eastern Ghats in Tamil Nadu, up a hairpin ghat road from Salem. It goes by the name "poor man's Ooty".
BR Hills (Biligiriranga Hills). BR Hills is about 160 to 215 km away depending on the route, about 5 to 6 hours by road, in Chamarajanagar district. It has been a tiger reserve since January 2011, with peaks up to 1,800 m and a village on top of the hills rather than a town.
Coorg (Kodagu). Coorg is about 260 to 265 km away, 5 to 7 hours by road, around the town of Madikeri at 1,170 m. It is often called the Scotland of India, and it is the farthest of the Karnataka hills in this band.

7 hours and more - Ooty, Coonoor, Wayanad and Kodaikanal
Ooty (Udhagamandalam). Ooty is about 270 km away, about 7 hours by road via Mysuru and Bandipur, at 2,240 m in the Nilgiris. As of August 2025, the forest road through Bandipur is closed to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am, so plan to cross it in daylight.
Coonoor. Coonoor is nearby, about 19 km and an hour past Ooty, so add that to Ooty's 7 hours.
Wayanad. Wayanad, in Kerala, is about 280 to 310 km away, 6 to 7.5 hours via Mysuru and NH766. That road also crosses Bandipur and closes from 9 pm to 6 am, and from 6 pm for two-wheelers.
Kodaikanal. Kodaikanal is about 450 to 465 km away, more than double Sakleshpur's distance, which makes it a place to visit on a long holiday, not a two-day weekend.
If you only have two days, the 7-hour hills leave you about one day there. The next question is which of these hills is cold enough to be worth the hours.
Which is the coldest place near Bangalore
Ooty is the coldest hill station within a long drive of Bangalore: at 2,240 m, its long-term average high in April is about 23°C, against about 34°C in Bengaluru, and its winter nights average about 6 to 7°C.
Within 2 hours of the city, Nandi Hills is the coolest nearby option. It sits about 580 m higher than Bengaluru, so it is usually cooler, especially early in the morning.
For the places with long-term climate records, the gap looks like this:
| Place | Height | Average high, April (°C) | Average low, January (°C) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | 900 m | 34.1 | 16.1 |
| Sakleshpur | 932 m | 31.6 | 15.2 |
| Yercaud | 1,515 m | 29.4 (May) | 12.4 |
| Ooty | 2,240 m | 22.7 | 6.5 |
Long-term averages from climate records (Ooty 1991 to 2020). For Yercaud, the high shown is the May average.
Most Karnataka hills are milder, not cold, in April. Chikmagalur's long-term summer range is about 25 to 32°C, and Kodagu, the district around Coorg, has a long-term summer average of 28.6°C. Even Sakleshpur, where we run a resort, is only about 2.5°C cooler than Bengaluru on an April afternoon; it is at its coolest in the monsoon.
So the right hill changes with the month.
Which hill station is coolest in which month
The coolest hill station changes with the season: Ooty for April and May heat, the Western Ghats towns for the monsoon, and almost any hill from October to February.
| Months | Coolest places within a weekend drive | Why (long-term averages) |
|---|---|---|
| December to February | Ooty for real cold; Yercaud, Chikmagalur and Sakleshpur for mild days | Ooty nights about 6.5 to 7°C; Yercaud January nights about 12°C; Chikmagalur 11 to 20°C in winter; Sakleshpur nights about 15°C |
| March to May | Ooty, which needed summer e-passes in 2024 and 2025 | Ooty highs about 23°C while Bengaluru passes 33°C; Yercaud's May high about 29°C; Chikmagalur 25 to 32°C in summer |
| June to September | The Western Ghats: Sakleshpur, Coorg, Chikmagalur | Sakleshpur's July high about 24°C, with about 835 mm of rain that month; Ooty's July high about 17°C |
| October to November | The Western Ghats after the rain; Nandi Hills from September | Sakleshpur turns cool and clear from October; Karnataka Tourism lists September to February as the best time to visit Nandi Hills |
On some winter mornings the top of Nandi Hills sits above the cloud, which is why people drive up before dawn from November to February.
To plan a trip around one season, see our summer, monsoon and winter guides, and the post-monsoon guide for October and November.
The month also decides how crowded the hill will be.
Quiet hill towns or popular ones: which hill stations are less crowded
The busiest hill stations near Bangalore are easy to spot because they have had to bring in rules to manage visitors: passes at Nandi Hills, e-passes and vehicle caps at Ooty and Kodaikanal, and online booking for the peaks at Chikmagalur.
Busiest, with rules to prove it
- Nandi Hills brought in weekend passes and parking caps in March 2022, and a news report described a long queue of vehicles on the road up in July 2024.
- Ooty and Kodaikanal needed e-passes for vehicles in the summer of 2024. For April to June 2025, a Madras High Court order capped tourist vehicles into the Nilgiris at 6,000 a day on weekdays and 8,000 on weekends.
- Mullayanagiri and Bababudangiri, the peaks at Chikmagalur, need an online booking from September 2025. On a long weekend in late June 2026, more than a thousand vehicles entered the Mullayanagiri road at once.
- Coorg received nearly 9 million tourists in two years, according to the Karnataka Tourism Department (reported in July 2025).
Quieter, smaller places
- Horsley Hills in Andhra Pradesh is known as a quiet hill station, except at New Year.
- BR Hills is a tiger reserve with a village on top, not a town.
- Yelagiri is a hill village reached by 14 hairpin bends.
- Sakleshpur, a Malnad town, is quiet on weekdays. On long weekends its stays fill up and Manjarabad Fort gets busy, as one rider found: "Since it was a long weekend, Sakleshpur was crowded, hence we decided to just have a look at the Manjarabad fort." (Reddit, r/bangalorebikes)
Timing matters more than the place. Visit on a weekday or an ordinary weekend, and reach the famous viewpoints early. For quieter hill towns worth the drive, there is a separate offbeat guide.
That leaves the question of where Sakleshpur honestly fits.
Where does Sakleshpur fit, and is it worth the drive
Sakleshpur sits in the 4 to 5 hour band, about 220 km from Bengaluru, in the Malnad (Malenadu) hills of Hassan district on the edge of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012. For a hill station it is low: at 932 m, it is only about 30 m higher than Bengaluru.
It is worth the drive for two quiet days among coffee and spice estates: a slow trip rather than a sightseeing one. The monsoon is the season to visit: from June to September the hills turn green and the waterfalls run, with about 835 mm of rain in July alone. Winter nights have a long-term average of about 15°C. The places to see are short drives away: Manjarabad Fort is 8.7 km, about 13 minutes, from Ashvana, and Bisle View Point about an hour.
It is not the place to escape April heat, when Sakleshpur's long-term average high is 31.6°C. There is no high peak to climb (Chikmagalur has Mullayanagiri), and the list of sights is short.
We run Ashvana, a resort in Sakleshpur, so weigh this with that in mind.
For Sakleshpur against Coorg or Chikmagalur, see the side-by-side guide; for a homestay or a resort, see the guide on that choice.
Whichever hill you pick, a few checks before you go can save you hours on the road.
What should you check before you drive to a hill station
The checks that matter most are the entry rule for your date, any forest road that closes at night, and leaving early enough to drive the ghat in daylight.
- Look up the entry rule for your dates at the busiest places. Nandi Hills has changed its rules several times (weekend passes in 2022, a weekday closure for road repairs in March and April 2025), and Ooty and Kodaikanal needed summer e-passes in 2024 and 2025, with vehicle caps in 2025.
- Time the forest roads. As of August 2025, the Bandipur roads to Ooty and Wayanad are closed from 9 pm to 6 am, and the Wayanad road closes to two-wheelers from 6 pm.
- Book the peaks before your visit. Mullayanagiri and Bababudangiri have needed an online booking since September 2025.
- Leave early, so the hairpins and forest stretches are behind you before dark.
- On a long weekend, add time to every figure in the table.
- Mobile signal can drop in the hills, so download offline maps before you leave the highway.
With those checks done, the 4 to 5 hour band leaves one last choice for a hill station trip: where to stay.
If the 4 to 5 hour band suits you, Ashvana is a quiet resort in Sakleshpur's Malnad hills, 13 minutes from Manjarabad Fort, with cottages from ₹6,300 a night on weekdays, GST included (2026). It suits a two-day hill trip where you don't have to plan every minute.
Close enough for a weekend. Far enough to truly disconnect.
